Wurzburg is located at 252 Km on the Main River.  This is the home of light Franconian white wine with many sold in the Bocksbeutal Bottles.  Wurzburg is important for its prince-bishops and the rebuild of the Residenz Palace which sits over the vineyards.

Ama Waterways offers 3 tours of Wurzburg and 1 tour of Rothenburg:

  2. “Residenz Palace” was originally built for the prince-biships of Schonbrunn family.  It is a Baropue Palace which is one of the largest ones in Germany.  There are many works of art including the “Mirror Room”.  You will stroll around the formal and English Gardens.  You will have a fabulous views of the river.
  3. “Marienberg Fortress Hike” is 3 hours and a Level 2 Difficulty.  Marienberg Fortress is high above the city and was the ruling seat of the prince-bishops.  There is a museum, restaurant, and formal gardens with views of the river.
  4. “Rothenburg Excursion” is a full day of 5 hours and 45 minutes and is a Level 2-3.  There is a 2 hour bus ride.  Rothenburg is a small village full of character and charm.  On the Romantic Road and is considered the most beautiful town in Germany.  Surrounded by Roman walls, towers, gates and half timber-framed buildings and churches.  You will have free time to shop and/or get lunch.

While we were in Wurzburg a Wine Festival was being held on the Old Main Bridge.  This bridge is a pedestrian bridge where they sell wine.  Get a glass of wine and find a spot to enjoy it.

Note:  50 years ago we spent a lot of time in Wurzburg which was only 20 years after WWII.  Today most Wurzburg has been reconstructed and is no longer the Wurzburg I used to know.  Because of this we opted to take the Rothenburg Tour.
