Melk Abbey is located at Km 2037 on the Danube River in Melk, Austria. Arrive in the late afternoon and walk the river path to the bus stop. Board the bus for the ride through town upwards to 130 feet until you reach the Melk Abbey. The Benedictine Abbey was founded by Leopold II in 1089. For 900 years the monks lived and worked in the Melk Abbey following the rules of St. Benedict. This Abbey has been destroyed and rebuilt several times. Today’s architecture dates from the 18th Century. The Abbey now houses a museum and a world famous library. You will see frescoes and a collection of musical manuscripts. Also enjoy the grounds and gardens surrounding the Abbey with views of the Danube River and the town of Melk below.
