Monticello Wine Trail

 

This is the original research document for the Monticello Wine Trail.  All the wineries are listed here.  There is also some lodging and restaurant information.  See the Virginia Wine Country Blog for my final choices.  The vineyards that we have not tried yet, we hope to visit in the near future.  Should you try them first please let me know what you think.

 

Vineyards on the Trail

 

  1. Afton Mountain Vineyards

Afton Mountain Vineyards is located at 234 Vineyard Lane Afton, Va. 22920.  Telephone number is 540-456-8667.  Website is aftonmountainvineyards.com.  Tasting Room is open 7 days a week from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  Tasting Fee is $10.00.  Light picnic fare is available in the form of crackers, breads, cheeses, and meats to enjoy on the patio.  They produce Pinoit Noir, Cabernet Franc, Sangeovise, Cabernet Sav, Petit Verdot, Chardonnay, other whites and other roses.

 

  1. Barboursville Vineyards

Barboursville Vineyards is located 17655 Winery Road, Barboursville, Va.  Telephone is 540-832-3824.  Winery is located 2 hours from DC and 1 and ¼ hours from Richmond.  Website is www.bbvwine.com.  Tasting Room is open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Sunday from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  Palladio Restaurant is open Wednesday to Sunday for lunch from 12:00 PM to 2:30 PM.  Palladio Restaurant is open for dinner Friday and Saturday night from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM.  Wine Tours are available on Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM.  Tours are by appointment only.   The Library 1821 is open weekends from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM with tasting $20.00 per person.  We  have visited this winery 4 or 5 times and we love it here.  This vineyard is part of Virginia Wine Country Road Trip.

 

  1. Belenheim Vineyards

Belenheim Vineyards is located on Belenheim Road, Number 31 Belenheim Farm in Charlottesville, Va. 22902.  Website is www.blenheimvineyards.com.    The telephone number is 434-293-5366.  Wine Tasting Room is open daily from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  Tasting is $6.00.

 

  1. Burnley Vineyards

Burnley Vineyards is located at 4500 Winery Lane in Barboursville, Va. 22923.  Telephone number is 540-832-2828.  Website is www.burnleywines.com.  Tasting Room is open January to April on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  After April 15th the tasting room is open until December  daily 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  Burnley Vineyards produces Chardonnay, Cab Dora, Reisling, Cab Sav, Charmbourcin, Vidal, and Norton.

 

  1. Cardinal Point Vineyard and Winery

Cardinal Point Vineyard and Winery is located at 9423 Batesville Road, Afton, Virginia 22920.  The telephone number is 540-456-8400.  Website is www.cardinalpointwinery.com.  The Tasting Room is open every day from 11:00 AM to 5:30 PM and costs $7.00 per person.  Cardinal Point produces Rose, Rockfish Red, Cab Franc, Petit Verdot.  Wines average between $20 to $30 per bottle.

 

  1. Chestnut Oak Vineyard

Chestnut Oak Vineyard is located at 5050 Stony Point Road in Barboursville, Va.  22923.  Telephone number is 434-964-9104.  Website is www.chestnutoakvineyard.com.  Open Weekends for Wine Tasting.  They produce  a Petit Manseng and a Cab Sav.  Bottles range from $16 to $25.

 

  1. Del Fosse Vineyard and Winery

Del Fosse Vineyard and Winery is located at 500 Del Fosse Winery Lane in Faber, Va.  22938.  Telephone number is 434-263-6100.  Website is www.delfossewine.com.     Tasting Room is open Wednesday to Sunday from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

 

  1. Democracy Vineyards

Democracy Vineyards is located at 585 Mountain  Cove Road in Lovingston, Va. 22949.  Telephone number is 434-263-8463.  Website is www.democracyvineyards.com.  Tasting Room is open April to December on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM.  A partial tasting is $5.00 for 5 wines or a full tasting for $8.00 for 8 wines.  The vineyard produces Chambourcin, Petit Verdot, Merlot,  Pinotage, and Voigenier.

 

  1. Early Mountain Vineyards

Earl Mountain Vineyards is located at 6109 Wolftown Hood Road in Madison, Va.  The telephone number is 540-948-9005.  Website is www.earlymountain.com.  Tasting Room is open on Monday from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM, closed on Tuesday, open Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM.  This spot has lunch available.  From Seasonal ingredients of salads, sandwiches, cheese and charcucierie boards to flat breads and some specials.  Seating area has a fireplace .  Looks great from the pictures.  Winery produces reds, whites and desert wines.  This vineyard is wonderful.  We enjoyed our first visit here during the Virginia Wine Country Road Trip and look forward to returning on another trip.

 

  1. First Colony Winery

First Colony Winery is located at 1650 Harris Creek Road in Charlottesville, Va. 22902.  Telephone number is 434-979-7105.  Website is www.firstcolonywinery.com.  Tasting Room is open daily Monday to Friday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.  Saturday and Sunday they are open 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM.  Tours are available on Saturday or Sunday by appointment only.  This vineyard produces  Rose, Chardonnay, Zephyer, Chardonnay Estate, Meritage, Silver Doctor, and Claret.  Bottles range from $18.00 to $30.00.

 

  1. Flying Fox Vineyard

Flying Fox Vineyard is located at 27 Chapel Hollow Road in Afton, Va. 22920.  Telephone number is 424-361-1692.  Website is www.flyingfoxvineyard.com.   This is a small family run winery that produces Melot, Cab Franc, Petit Verdot, Voignier, and Pinot.  The Tasting Room is open Friday to Monday from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  There is a winter fireplace room and a summer patio for Wine Tasting.

 

  1. Gabriele Rousse Winery

Gabriele Rousse Winery is located at 3247 Carters Mountain Road in Charlottesville, Va. 22902.  Telephone number is 434-981-1677.  Website is www.gabriele-roussewinery.com.   Call ahead for hours the Tasting Room is open.  Tasting fee is $12.00.  Vineyard produces Cab Franc, Cab Sav Reserve, Nebbuilo Reserve and Pinot Grigio.

 

  1. Glass House Winery

Glass House Winery is located at 5898 Free Union Road in Free Union, Va.  The telephone number is 434-975-0094.  Website is www.glasshusewinery.com.  Tasting Room is open Thursday from Noon to 9:00 PM, and on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday until 5:30 PM.  Tasting are $8.00 to 10.00 and they have cheese, meat and tapas available.

 

  1. Grace Estate Winery

Grace Estate Winery is located at 5273 Mount Juliet Farm in Crozet, Va.  22932.  The telephone number is 434-823-1486.  Website is www.graceestatewinery.com.  Tasting Room is open Wednesday to Sunday from 11:00 AM to 5:30 PM except Saturday when they are open until 8:00 PM.  Classic Tasting Flights are $7.00.  Tastings on Saturday of Reserve wines are $9.00.  On Sunday tasting are $12.00 and include wine and cheese parings.  Vineyard produces Viognier, Chardonnay, Le Gras Curve, Petit Verdot, Cab Franc, Merlot, and Bordeaux.

 

  1. Horton Vineyards

Horton Vineyards are located at 6399 Spotswood Trail in Gordonsville, Va.  The telephone number is 800-829-4633.  Tasting room is open 7 days a week from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  Tastings are $5.00 per person and the vineyard produces White, Red, and Desert Wines.  Website is www.hortonwine.com.  We have visited Horton Vineyards a couple of times.  They have a large selection of wines for tasting.  Horton Vineyards is part of the Virginia Wine Country Road Trip.

 

  1. Jefferson Vineyards

Jefferson Vineyards is located at 1353 Thomas Jefferson Parkway in Charlottesville, Va.  Telephone number is 434-977-3042.  Tasting Room is open 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily.  Vineyard produces Dry White, Dry Rose, Dry Red and semi dry White wines.  Website is www.jeffersonvineyards.com.  We have visited Jefferson Vineyards a couple of times in back years.  We enjoy their wines.  On weekends they open two wine tasting rooms as it can tend to get crowded.

 

  1. Keswick Vineyards

Keswick Vineyards is located at 6131 Gordonsville Road in Keswick, Va.  Telephone number is 434-244-3341.  Website is www.keswick.com.  Tasting Room is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  The vineyard  produces Cab Franc, Cab Sav, Voignier, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Merlot and a chocolate sauce that is a must buy.  We first visted here a year ago.  We love their chocolate sauce.

 

  1. Kilaurwen Winery

Kilaurwen Winery is located at 1543 Evergreen Church Road in Standsville, Va. 22973.  Website is www.kilaurwenwinery.com.  This winery is located 8 miles from Shenandoah National Park.  The vineyard produces Reisling, Cab Franc, Rose, and Charmbourcins ranging in price from $17.00 to $30.00.  Tasting room is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from Noon to 5:00 PM.  They are also open on Monday Holidays.

 

  1. King Family Vineyards

King Valley Vineyards is located at 6550 Roseland Farm in Crozet, Va. 22932.  Telephone number is 434-823-7800.  Website is www.kingfamilyvineyards.com.  Tasting Room is open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM and late on Wednesdays until 8:30 PM.  Wine tours are available on Saturday and Sunday by reservation.  We visited this Vineyard on our Virginia Wine Country Road Trip.

 

  1. Loving Cup Vineyards

Loving Cup Vineyard is located at 3340 Sutherland Road in North Garden, Va. 22959.  Telephone number is 434-984-0774.  Wine Tastings are available Friday to Sunday from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  Tasting Fee is $5.00.  Vineyard produces White, Red and Rose wines from $14.00 to $25.00.  Website is www.lovingcupwine.com.

 

  1. Lovingston Winery

Lovingston Winery is located at 885 Freshwater Cove Lane in Lovingston, Va. 22949.  Telephone Number is 434-263-8467.  Website is www.lovinstonwinery.com.  Tasting Room is open April to November Wednesdays to Friday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM and Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 to 5:00 PM.  In December to March please call for an appointment.  Vineyard produces a Cab Franc, Seyval Blanc, Seyval Blanc, Petit Menseng,  Pinotage and some Reds.

 

 

  1. Moss Vineyards

Moss Vineyards is located at 1849 Simmons Gap Road in Nortonsville, Va. 22935.  Telephone number is 434-990-0111.  Website is www.mossvineyards.net.  Tasting Room is open Noon to 5:00 PM on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Tasting cost $8.00 per person.  This winery produces Viognier, Rose, Cab Franc, and Bordeaux and is $22.00 to $40.00.

 

  1. Pippin Hill Farm and Vineyards

Pippin Hill Farm and Vineyards is located at 5022 Plank Road in North Garden, Va.  Telephone number is 434-201-8063.  Website is www.pippenhillfarm.com.  Tastings are available Tuesday though Friday and Sunday from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  On Saturday they are open 11:00 AM to 4:30 PM.  Lunch is available and reservations can be booked with Open Door.  Vineyard also has a Cooking School for $75.00.  Lunch is served 11:00 AM to 2:30 PM.  Vineyard takes American Express, Visa, and Mastercard for purchases.  We have visited this Vineyard four or five times.  This vineyard is part of the Virginia Wine Country Road Trip.

 

  1. Pollak Vineyards

Pollak Vineyards is located at 330 Newton Road in Greenwood, Va. 22943.  Telephone number is 540-456-8844.  Website is www.pollakvineyards.com.  Tasting Room has snacks, cheese, meat and some tapas.  Tasting Room is open daily from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  Vineyard produces Meritage, Cab Sav, Cab Franc, Merlot, Petite Verdot, Chardonnay, Vioger, Pinot Gris, and Rose.

 

  1. Prince Michael Vineyards

Prince Michael Vineyards is located at 1435 Carters Mountain Trail, Charlottesville, Va.  22902.  Website is www.princemichael.com  Tasting room is open from April to October 7 days a week from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.   November – March Tasting Room is open   on Monday to Thursday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  Open on Friday and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.  Sundays from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

 

 

  1. Reynard Florence Vineyards

Stinson Vineyards is located at 4744 Sugar Hollow Road in Crozet, Va.  The telephone number is 434-823-7300.  Website is www.stinsonvineyards.com.  Tasting Room is open Thursday to Sunday from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  Wine Tasting is $10.00 per person.  This vineyard produces Cab Sav, Sav Blanc, Chardonnay, Rose, Cab Franc, Merlot and Meritage wines.

 

  1. Stone Mountain Vineyards

Stone Mountain Vineyards is located at 1376 Wyatt Mountain Road in Dyke, Va.  Telephone number is 909-463-9463.  Website is  www.stonemountainvineyards.com.  Tasting Room is open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  This vineyard produces Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay Reserve, Merlot, Meritage and Petit Verdot.

 

  1. Trump Winery

Trump Winery is located in Charlottesville, Va.  Lodging is available on site at Annabelle Estate.  Trump Winery is known for its sparkling wine.  There is a lunch and snack menu provided in the wine tasting area.    Tasting Room is open daily from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  This vineyards also produces White, Red and Roses wines.  We have visited this winery in past years and it is very good.  Try some sparkling wine and order lunch.

 

  1. Veritas Vineyards and Winery

Veritas Vineyards and Winery is located at 151 Afton Lane in Afton, Va. 22920.   Telephone number is 540-456-8000.  Website is www.veritaswines.com.  Tasting Room is open Monday to Friday from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM.  Open Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  Tasting is $7.00 per person.  Cheese and characteire plates are available in the tasting room.  Estate is farm to table.  There is a deck for your enjoyment.

 

  1. Virginia Wine Works

Virginia Wine Works is located at 1781 Harris Creek Way in Charlottesville, Va.  22902.  Telephone number is 434-296-3438.  Website is www.virginiawineworks.com.  Tasting Room is open daily from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  This winery produces Petite Manseng, Chardonnay, Merlot and Meritage wines.

 

  1. White Hall Vineyards

Restaurants

 

Palladio at Baboursville Vineyards

Palladio is located at the Baboursville Vineyards  at 176 Winery Road in Baboursville, Va.  Telephone number is 540-832-7848 and reservations are a must.  Reservations should be made for lunch or dinner at least one week in advance.  Website is www.bbvwine.com.   Culinary classes are available.  Hours are Wednesday to Sunday for lunch from 12:00 PM to 2:30 PM.  Dinner is served Friday and Saturday night from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM.

Lunch Menu is two courses for $41.00 or $51.00 with the pared wines.  Three courses is $47.00 with pared wines $60.00.  Four courses is $55.00 with pared wines is $71.00.  A reserve wine flight is $25.00.

A four course dinner is $80.00 and with wine parings is $30.00.

This restaurant is worth every cent.  I have never been disappointed.   Most times a wine tasting in the tasting room is included if you are having lunch or dinner at Palladio.  This restaurant is high end and reminds me very much of Napa Valley.  We have eaten in this restaurant four or five times.  It is that good.

We visited Palladio at Baboursville Vineyards on our Virginia Wine Country Road Trip.

 

Barbeque Exchange

Barbeque Exchange is located at 102 Martinsburg Ave in Gordonsville, Va.  Telephone number is 540-832-0227.  Website is bbqex.com.  Restaurant has take out orders, family dinners and a sit down restaurant.  They have sandwiches served with French Fries or Hush Puppies, chicken, pork, and ribs with lots of side choices.  It is very reasonable and is open daily from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM for lunch or dinner.  We still need to try this restaurant and hope to visit here on our next trip in November 2017.  If you try it first please let me know.

Pomme

 

Pomme is located at 115 S. Main Street in Gordonville, Va. 22942.  The telephone is 540-832-0130.  Web site is www.restaurant-pomme.com.  They are open Tuesday to Saturday from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM for lunch.  They are open Tuesday to Saturday for dinner from 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM.  They serve brunch on Sunday from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM.  They are closed Sunday night and all day Monday.  They have an extensive wine list.  Reservations may be booked with Open Table.  This is a high end restaurant.  We ate dinner here during our Virginia Wine Country Road Trip.

 

 

Keswick Hall

Keswick Hall is located at 701 Club Drive in Keswick, Va. 22947.  The telephone number is 434-979-3440.  Website is www.keswick.com.  Fosset’s is open for breakfast from 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM and dinner on Wednesday to Sunday from 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM.  High Tea is served on Saturday from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM for $23.00.  A jacket is suggested for this restaurant in the evening and at tea.

Villa Crawford  Bar is open daily from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM.  The lunch buffet is on Monday to Friday from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM and ala cart is daily from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM.

Club Grill is open for lunch on Wednesday to Saturday from 11:30 AM to 4:00 PM.  Open for dinner on Wednesday to Saturday from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM.  They serve brunch on Sunday from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM.  There is a bar menu and an extensive wine list.  I’ve had lunch here and it was very good.  The tables inside are spread way out for a more private dining and meals and drinks are also served on the patio overlooking the golf course or the pool.   We stayed at Keswick Hall and ate in their restaurants on our Virginia Wine Country Road Trip.

 

Michie Tavern

Michie Tavern is located at 683 Thomas Jefferson Parkway in Charlottesville, Va. 22902.  Website is www.michietavern.com.  Dining Room is open 7 days a week.  Midday Fare is 11:15 AM to 3:30 PM from April to December.  Open November to March from 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM for Midday Fare.  The General Store is open from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM.  Gift Shop is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  The Menu is Southern Fried Chicken, Pulled Port, Baked Chicken, Mash Potato and Gravy, Black-eyed Peas, Stewed Tomato, Green Beans and Ham, Cole Slaw, Baby Beets, and Corn Bread and Bisicuts.  The Buffet is $17.95.  Michie Tavern is part of the Monticello Neighborhood Pass which is Michie Tavern, Monticello, and Ash Lawn.  The pass runs $40.00 for all three.  We have eaten in Michie Tavern in past years and it is very enjoyable.
