The foods are very similar to Hungry, Slovakia, and Germany.  Weinerschnitzel, Sachertorte a chocolate torte, apple strudels, goulash, dumplings, potato soup, onion quiche, classic tafelspitz, roast pork, and beef Roulade are foods to try.  Weiner Schnitzel is a famous Vienna veal cutlet specialty fried in an egg coating and should be golden brown in color.  Sachertorte is a rich chocolate cake from 1887.  The Sacher Hotel baked 400 cakes a day back in 1887.  Today they bake about 550 cakes a day upwards to 3,000 daily during the Christmas season.  Vienna is famous for it’s coffee houses.  The Turkish armies introduced coffee to Vienna in 1683.  The first coffee house was opened in 1685.

During the 17th and 18th Century Austria became one of the greatest powers in Europe.  The country was reduced to a small republic after it’s defeat in WWI.  Then came the Annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938.  The Allies occupied Austria in 1945 and remained until 1955  when Austria became independent.  Austria entered the  EU in 1999.

This  country is 83,871 sq. Km or 21,722 sq. Miles.  The population is 8.5 million people and the capital is Vienna with 1.73 million people.
