Bamberg is a city of half timbered houses, a veggie market, a kyack run setup by the townhall, and trying smoked beer in Old Town.
Ama Waterways offers three tours of Bamberg:
- “UNESCO City Walking Tour” with a smoked beer tasting. This tour lasts 4 hours with a 45 minute bus ride. You will be walking one and half hours. You will see the Old Town Hall which is the most photographed building in Bamberg. It is built in the middle of the river. You will visit Cathedral Square and the Bamberg’s Cathedral. You will stop at an outside beer garden for a taste of smoked beer. Then you will see the Old Courthouse, New Residence, the rose garden, little Venice as well as the Old Town Hall before joining your bus back to the Ama Viola.
- A “Bike Tour to Eltmann” which lasts 3 hours and is 25 Km or 15 miles. Pedal through the town of Bamberg along the river to the enchanting town of Eltmann.
- “Tastes of Bamberg Tour” which lasts 3 hours and has an hour bus ride. The difficulty level is 2. You will have a short walking tour of the Old Town with culinary stops to taste licorice root, have sweet and salty snacks. Learn to make Bamberg Hornla which is a croissant style roll from a recipe that dates back to 1427. Have a taste of German sausages with smoked beer at the brewery. Plus sample some craft beers. You will see the Garden District, Cathedral Hill, St. Michales Monestary, Town of Bamberg, Gruner’s Market and the Bakery Beck.
Bamberg is on the Main Danube Canal at 4 to 6 Km’s. The city was built on 7 hills and during the Middle Ages was known as a “German Rome”. Bamberg is one of the main cities in Franconia (now in Bavaria) and is famous for its beers and dark ale (smoked beer). Bamberg’s Old City Hall (1355 – 1440) is perched on a bridge which contains the Ludwig Collection of porcelain. On a nearby river bank the historic crane and humble houses of “Little Venice” can be seen.
The Altes Rathaus – Old City Hall is built on an island in the river.
Bamberg is 90 Km or 56 miles from Volach. The city had little damage from WWII bombing raids so the buildings are original. Today Bamberg is known for it’s car parts industry and houses a University of 12,000 students.
A local dish is the Bamberger Onion stuffed with minced pork, smoked pork belly and onion with a slice of bacon. There are eight breweries which make Rauchbier (smoked beer) in Bamberg.

On the river near the town hall is a kyack run which can be set for training purposes.
When you leave Bamberg you will be leaving the Main Danbube Canal and entering the Main River.
